Sales Tip: Get Involved in Product Development
Life can be so frustrating. I remember early in my career, our products weren’t perfect. In fact, they were far from it, and it was so frustrating to work so hard prospecting customers, getting meetings, doing discovery, only to learn that we lost the deal because our products just weren’t good enough.
I have to admit, I spent some time complaining about this. Until one day, a very wise mentor said, “Katie, if you want things to be different, you have to MAKE them different.”
She was right. What she meant was, I needed to get involved, and instead of complaining, and do something constructive to affect change. After that, I DID get involved in product development. I offered to be on committees, I sent feedback, I offered my opinions any time I had a chance.
And you know what? Things did change. Our products improved and it made it much easier to win deals.
To this day, I tell my kids, “You’re not allowed to complain about it if you’re not willing to do something about it.”
We CAN change things. We just have to try.
